Matt Brej

I'm an active visual artist, from Northern Illinois, working primarily in the medium of ceramics.  Improvisation, exploration, and evolution play huge roles in my work.  All pieces are carved and composed freehand, resulting in uniquely one of a kind art.

My focus during graduate school was developing a new sculptural series of work called Space-Gems (shown here).  These objects are influenced by earthly and extraterrestrial phenomena, and can be displayed in a variety of ways.  I've attempted to dynamically integrate geometric order and organic flow in each composition.

I have also been a working potter since 2006, selling my wares publicly at various street and art fairs since 2009.  Subject matter present on the carved utilitarian surface is inspired by improvisational music, momentary awareness, and perception. They are meant to be felt, used, and shared. All works are freely open to interpretation by the user, observer, or collector.
